Donations and Gifts Policy

Monetary donations to the Library for the purchase of a new book or books, are popular as a means of honoring or remembering a loved one.  It is helpful if broad subjects (such as gardening or baseball) are suggested, so that an appropriate item may be selected.  The book that is purchased will have a bookplate affixed, which indicates both the person being honored and the name of the donor.  Contact the Library’s Administrative Assistant for more information.

The library will accept books and materials only if they are in excellent condition.  Many of them will be sold through the Library’s Book Store.  Selected items may be added to the library’s collection.  All proceeds from the book sale are used to enhance the programs and collections of the New Providence Memorial Library.

These items will not be accepted:

Items that are tattered, yellowed, musty, stained

Items that are highlighted, written in, or that have loose pages

            Books previously discarded from libraries

            Paperbacks that are obviously worn

            Encyclopedia sets

            Readers Digest Condensed Books

            Computer software and computer manuals

            VHS tapes

Donations that are welcome include:

Books about New Providence or New Jersey history

Recent fiction/nonfiction books in excellent condition

            Paperbacks that are like new

            Children’s books in excellent condition

            DVDs in excellent condition

            Music CDs in excellent condition

            Audiobooks in excellent condition

After checking the materials with the circulation desk staff, items should be brought to the bottom of the stairs.  The library will not affix a value for income tax purposes to any gift accepted; this is the responsibility of the donor.  The library staff will, on request, provide a form to record the number of books, DVDs and audio books for the donor’s records.

Holiday Building Closing

The Library remains open even if the building will close for a little while...

Because of rising rates of COVID-19 infection in the County and in the town of New Providence, we are being cautious and closing our building to public access from Monday, December 21 through at least Monday January 11 subject to a decrease in infection levels.

Staff is, of course, in the building and we will continue to offer foyer pickup, craft kits and window shopping.  We also have special book bundles prepared for fast  and contact-free gift giving which are available in the foyer.  Take advantage of our Choose 3 Books for Me service or use the Browse Our Shelves feature to request items.  Make sure to check out Ms. Sam's Story Time Room to make browsing for kids' books fun and high tech.

Check our full schedule of events, too.  We look forward to welcoming you back into the library in the New Year and we hope that the holidays bring peace, joy and health to you and all of your loved ones.
